11 Most Incredible Budgie Toys For 2023

The best budgie toys work as an outlet for a parrot’s natural behaviours, such as chewing, foraging, and climbing.
If it doesn’t encourage at least one natural behaviour, it’s not a good toy…
Budgies that don’t have a variety of toys to play with will turn their attention to your tables, chairs, walls, and literally anything else they can get their little beaks on. Although parakeets are small, they can still ravage your house unless you provide them with better things to destroy.

11 Best Foraging & Shredding Toys For Budgies
1. EBaokuup 2 PK Of Rattan Shredding Balls – #1 Best Toy Overall
Facts about this toy:
Size: 9″ Tall
Materials used: Wood, rattan, metal (bell), coloured paper
Brand: EBaokuup
Pros:
- Encourages foraging & chewing – The rattan wood balls are ideal for both shredding and foraging. Your budgies will have a great time chewing the natural wood while also searching for treats within the coloured crinkle paper.
- Can be refilled – Eventually, your budgies will rip out all the coloured paper and they’ll be left with just the circular wooden frame. If the frame isn’t too badly damaged, you can refill it with your own paper or other materials to extend the toy’s lifespan. If it can’t be refilled, there are plenty of ways to use the rattan frame on its own.
- Good value pack – Considering how fun and durable just one of these balls is, having two in the packet is a good value deal, especially for the relatively cheap price.
Cons:
- Metal bell – Metal bells can potentially be a hazard for budgies, especially since the type of metal it’s made from is unspecified. This is what the vet told me when she saw a bell toy inside my cockatiel’s cage, which is why I’m giving you the same advice. Remove the bell from this toy to ensure your parakeet’s safety.
2. Planet Pleasures Pineapple Foraging Toy

Facts about this toy:
Size: Small size = 5″ tall | Medium = 7″ tall | Large = 9″ tall
Materials used: Colourful palm leaves and plant materials.
Brand: Planet Pleasures
Pros:
- Can hide treats in – You can see the little triangles poking out of the toy from the image above. Those triangles are also little slots that you can easily fit seeds or millet inside for some foraging fun! However, your budgies will mostly use this toy for shredding.
- All-natural materials – As stated by the manufacturers, this toy is made from all-natural materials, mainly palm leaves. Natural toys are great for budgies to chew on and forage through.
- Strong & durable – Being tightly hand-woven has made this toy quite durable and long-lasting, especially for small budgies. Even with a few active chewers, the (medium-sized) toy will last at least a week.
Cons:
- No quick link connector – As with most Planet Pleasures toys, this one does not include a quick link for easy installation on the cage. You can see from the image that there is only a rope loop above the toy. You’ll need to use a connector from another toy or find some other way to loop it around the cage.
3. KATUMO Parakeet Seagrass Foraging Mat – #1 Best Foraging Toy
Facts about this toy:
Size: 11″ Long, 7.8″ Tall
Materials used: Seagrass, sola plant, bamboo, paper, wood, rattan, bird-safe plastic
Brand: KATUMO
Pros:
- Huge variety – You may already notice from the image how chaotic this seagrass mat looks! Although it looks messy, your budgies will spend hours exploring and playing with a huge variety of materials, colours, and objects. There’s a sola ball, some wooden blocks, bamboo finger traps, and a plastic leaf, all attached to a natural seagrass mat.
- Great forager – The reason this is the number 1 foraging toy for budgies is because of the many places you could hide treats in. You could place some millet balls within the bamboo finger traps and then sprinkle some seeds throughout the crinkle paper. The possibilities are endless!
- Easy to install – With two quick link connectors at the top of both sides of the seagrass mat, you can easily set this up as a foraging wall inside the cage.
- Very colourful – Budgies are attracted to colourful objects. The number of items and colours on this toy will surely grab the attention of your whole flock!
Cons:
- Wooden blocks are a bit tough – The colourful blocks on the far left side of the mat are a bit tough for budgies to destroy. They’ll probably have fun biting and swinging it around, but it’s too tough for them to shred to pieces.
- Plastic leaf – Although the leaf is made from non-toxic plastic, it’s still plastic, and parakeets will struggle to bite through it. Your birds will likely use the leaf as a step while they’re climbing around the mat and exploring other sections.
4. JW Pet Tip & Treat Puzzle Toy

Facts about this toy:
Size: 3.1 Inches tall
Materials used: Plastic and a mirror
Brand: JW Pet Company
Pros:
- Can be installed on the cage – On the back side of the dispenser features a large plastic screw, which is used to attach this puzzle to the cage. Due to its design, it must be installed between 2 verticle cage bars. If you don’t want it attached to the cage, you can place the toy on the floor or roof of the cage, or any other flat surface.
- Simple puzzle – This toy is a fun little puzzle that probably won’t take your budgies long to solve. Your birds must figure out that tilting the egg-shaped dispenser will release the stored food out onto the tray below. It took my cockatiel about an hour to figure it out, and he isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed (don’t tell him I said that), so it should take most other birds around 30 minutes.
Cons:
- Mirror behind dispenser – In general, mirrors aren’t the best playthings for birds. Many sources state that mirrors can cause aggression, hormonal behaviours, and other undesirable results. A mirror is featured behind the dispenser, but it shouldn’t be a problem as it’s mostly covered by the dispenser. If you notice odd behaviour in your bird because of the mirror, it may be a good idea to remove this toy.
- Can break easily – Many reviewers weren’t happy with the fragility of this toy. Those who complained either had it delivered damaged or it got damaged shortly after use. The main parts that broke for most people were the egg-shaped dispenser and the yellow plastic slots that hold it.
5. Planet Pleasures Natural Spiked Pinata Budgie Toy

Facts about this toy:
Size: Small = 9.5″ tall | Medium = 11″ tall | Large = 16″ tall
Materials used: Palm leaves. Plant materials.
Brand: Planet Pleasures
Pros:
- All-natural materials – Just like the previously reviewed planet pleasures toy, this one is made from recycled natural materials and palm leaves, which are great for budgies to shred.
- Highly durable – Being large, thick, and tightly handwoven, the spiked pinata toy is one of the most durable toys online. I bought this toy and it was still in decent condition even after a few weeks of use by my cockatiel.
- Size options – The spiked pinata is available in 4 sizes: Small, medium, large, and extra large. The extra large size might be too big for budgies, but any one of the other 3 sizes would be perfect.
- Great for shredding – Although there are very small slots around the toy for adding treats, your budgies will mainly use the spiked pinata for shredding and chewing. They’ll certainly have a good time destroying both the middle fibres and bottom tassels.
Cons:
- No quick link connector – Unfortunately, the spiked pinata does not include a quick link connector, which means you’ll need to find your own way to attach it to the cage. Luckily, they added a loop above the toy so you can add your own connector. But why didn’t the creators just add it themselves?
6. Bonka Bird Toys Colourful Big Wood Stick – #1 Best Chew Toy
Facts about this toy:
Size: 8.5″ Tall
Materials used: Plastic beans. Wood popsicle sticks.
Brand: Bonka Bird Toys
Pros:
- Perfect shredding toy – The wooden popsicle sticks are thin and easy to bite through, making it an ideal shredding toy for budgies and other small parrots. The popsicles can also spin around their bendable metal spine, which means you can shape it however you want before letting your budgies wreak havoc on it.
- Coloured option – This popsicle stick toy is available in the colour of regular wood or you can choose the coloured wood option. I suggest choosing the option that you believe will interest your flock the most. Both colours function the exact same way, it’s only the appearance that changes.
Cons:
- Not very durable – Despite being a great chew toy, it doesn’t take much chewing and shredding before the toy is completely destroyed. I’ve only had mine in the cage for 3 days and only 2 popsicles remain. And this is the work of just 1 cockatiel. Perhaps it’s too good of a shredding toy?
7. Delokey 7 Pack Of Different Foraging & Shredding Toys For Budgies

Facts about this toy:
Size: Varies with each toy
Materials used: Wood. Metal (bells). Coloured plastic (included in one toy). Rope (also just one toy)
Brand: Delokey
Pros:
- Amazing value pack – What really grabbed my attention is just how many unique toys you get in this pack for a really good price. Of course, some toys are better than others, but your budgies will certainly find at least 1 or 2 favourites out of the whole pack that they’ll spend hours on. Due to the great value for money, I’ve purchased this pack twice for my cockatiel and he loves them!
- Foraging & shredding toys – Almost all toys in this pack are either shredding toys, foraging toys, or both. The toy with star-shaped wooden blocks works great as a chewing and foraging toy as it includes rattan balls for treat hiding and fragile wooden blocks for shredding. The only items that don’t encourage these behaviours are the rope and swing toys, which are arguably the worst toys in the bundle.
- Individually packaged – Upon arrival, you’ll be happy to see that each toy is individually packaged, which helps keep them as clean as possible for your budgies.
Cons:
- Metal bells – Most toys in the bundle include a metal bell at the bottom. The swing perch alone has 4 bells underneath. Luckily, these are quite easy to break off to ensure your budgie’s safety.
- Includes rope toy – Some people may have different experiences with the rope toy, but the ones I received from both my orders were extremely loose and easily frayed. As soon as I saw it, I threw it out as it’s a hazard for birds to play and potentially digest rope fibres. My advice is to just ignore or get rid of the rope toy. The other toys are much better anyways, so your parakeets won’t miss out on anything.
8. Natural Seagrass Mat For Birds
Facts about this toy:
Size: 28″ Length x 6.7″ Wide
Materials used: Seagrass
Brand: Hamiledyi
Pros:
- Easy to hide treats within – You can easily stash small treats throughout the handwoven seagrass mat. Its design creates little openings along the entire mat where you can hide seeds, millet balls, and other treats for your budgie to find as they climb around.
- Works as a ladder – Not only can this seagrass mat be used as a foraging wall, but it makes for an awesome ladder or hammock too. You can install it vertically inside the cage, horizontally across the length of the cage, or you could even stretch it across two cages as a bridge!
- Very spacious – Being 28″ in length, this is a pretty spacious area for budgies to rest or hang out. If you installed it so it’s completely flat with no curves, then 3 or 4 budgies could comfortably sit along the whole length of the mat. Maybe even more than that because budgies love being close to each other.
- Can attach other toys – Other toys and objects can be hooked around the various knots and bars of the seagrass mat, which can help make it more interesting for your budgies.
Cons:
- Plastic clips – Don’t be misled by some of the product images, there are no stainless steel clips or quick link connectors, only plastic ones. Plastic clips aren’t necessarily bad, but falsy implying that you get metal clips with this product is.
9. Super Bird Creations SB632 Acrylic Cup Forager
Facts about this toy:
Size: 18″ tall
Materials used: Plastic. Acrylic. Metal (bell)
Brand: Super Bird Creations
Pros:
- Challenging forager – Compared to the other puzzle toy (4), this one is a bit more challenging. The goal for your budgie is to move the coloured plastic lid so they can access the treats in the clear cups. Simple concept, but it won’t be so simple for your budgies to solve, which is good as they’ll spend lots of time trying to figure it out!
- Budgie-safe materials – Being made primarily from acrylic and plastic, this toy is 100% safe for your parakeets.
Cons:
- Includes bell – The only thing that makes this toy potentially unsafe is the metal bell at the bottom. Luckily, it can be easily removed and it doesn’t affect how your budgies will use the toy.
- Cannot be shredded – Since this toy is made from hard plastic and acrylic materials, it cannot be destroyed. Larger parrots have managed to shred the plastic lids, but that’ll be impossible for little budgies
10. Super Bird Creations Crinkle Crinkle Little Star – #1 Best Budget Toy

Facts about this toy:
Size: 6.3″ Tall
Materials used: Paper, plastic beads, a natural vine, wood, and metal (bell and connector).
Brand: Super Bird Creations
Pros:
- Small & compact toy – This toy has many fun parts, materials, and uses, and it’s all stored in a neat, compact little package. Being only 6.3″ tall, it’s smaller than your budgie (they’re 7″ tall), making it far less intimidating for skittish birds than some larger toys. Simply a great budgie-sized toy!
- Great for shredding – Although you could add a few treats in certain places, your budgies will mainly use this toy for shredding and chewing. They’ll certainly have fun destroying the rattan ball in the middle, the natural vine, and ripping out the crinkle paper while also finding the occasional treat.
- Super cheap price – Being sold for only $5 – $10 (depending on the store), the crinkle little star is one of the best budget toys online for small parrots. You can get 2 or 3 of these toys and it’ll cost the same as getting just 1 of most other bird toys.
Cons:
- Metal bell – Yes, this is yet another bird toy with a potentially toxic metal bell. Again, the suggestion is to remove the bell before giving the toy to your budgie.
- Short-lived – Due to its compact structure, this toy is often short-lived and it doesn’t usually take a single budgie long to completely wreck it. If 2 or 3 budgies were dedicated enough, it would only last about an hour or 2.
11. KATUMO Bird Foraging Toy, Seagrass Basket
Facts about this toy:
Size: 14.5″ Tall
Materials used: Seagrass, bamboo finger traps, pecan nut, wood, bird-safe plastic, paper, and metal (bell)
Brand: KATUMO
Pros:
- Large variety – As the title accurately describes, this toy is a huge basket of different materials for budgies to play with. The basket itself is made from natural seagrass and the other items are made from the materials listed above. There are plenty of outlets for shredding, foraging, climbing, and preening, which is epic!
- Highly durable – Due to how many shreddable items are on this basket (plus the basket itself), this toy has a very long lifespan, even when facing the fury of multiple dedicated budgies.
- Very colourful – Budgies and most other parrots are very interested in colourful objects, and the KATUMO seagrass basket has many colours! It’ll likely intrigue your whole flock as soon as you put it in their enclosure.
Cons:
- Metal bell – Beneath the basket are two metal jingle bells. Metal bells, especially when made from undisclosed materials, are potentially toxic to budgies and should be removed.
Toys To Avoid Giving Your Budgies
Although many household materials and items can be used for homemade toys, there are plenty of things you must avoid giving your budgies as they’re either toxic or hazardous. By no means is this a full list, but here are some common toys and materials that can pose a threat to parakeets:
- Mirrors (can cause social issues, hormonal behaviour, and aggression for some birds)
- Happy huts (health hazard and can cause hormonal aggression)
- Heavy & toxic metals (Find out what metals are safe)
- Unsafe wood (ensure any wood you put in the cage is bird-safe)
- Toilet paper roll holders (some use toxic glues or adhesives, so it’s best to avoid toilet paper rolls)

Safe Materials For Homemade Budgie Toys
On the flip side, you can make some super fun DIY toys for your budgies using these bird-safe materials:
- Bird-safe wood (Bamboo, balsa, douglas fir, eucalyptus, bottlebrush)
- Cardboard
- Paper & coloured paper
- Cuttlebones also make for a fun chew toy
- Stainless steel (one of the safest metals for parrots)
- Vegetable tanned leather

Keep in mind that even though the material is safe for budgies to chew on and shred, it should not be digested unless it’s food. For example, paper is safe for birds to shred but since my cockatiel has grown accustomed to eating it, I can no longer provide him with paper toys.
You must be aware of how your budgie interacts with certain materials before providing it.
For new materials, you should first watch how they play with them before deciding if it’s safe for them to play with them unsupervised. If your birds have never played with cardboard before, you should watch their first interactions with it to ensure they don’t eat it or think it’s food.
