Top 5 Most Comfortable Flat Perches For Birds

Published by Joseph Calabrese on

Flat platform perches are a great addition to any bird cage.

Having a variety of perch types and perches of different thicknesses, shapes, and sizes is healthy for your bird’s feet.

From what I’ve seen, most birds enjoy using flat perches for roosting.

However, there are many platform perches on the market that are flimsy, toxic, or just straight-up unsuitable for birds.

Below are 5 flat perches that are ideal for a whole range of birds and parrot species.

Take a look, and see which one suits you best!

1. Niteangel Flat Wood Perches – #1 Best Overall Flat Perch For Birds

Key Features:

Dimensions: 7″ L x 3″ W x 0.9″ H (18cm L x 7.6cm W x 2.3cm H)

Materials: Fir wood

Ideal for: Budgies, cockatiels, conures, African greys, amazon parrots

Pros:

  • Can be used upside down – You can install this perch with the flat side facing upwards, or you can have it upside down with the curved bark side facing upwards. Your bird will be comfortable on either side.
  • Ideal roosting perch – Two days after buying this perch, my cockatiel decided it was the perfect sleeping spot, so this pro is a little biased. Since the perch width is about the length of a cockatiel’s feet, they’re able to poop over the side while also sitting on the comfy platform. Ideal for smaller parrots to sleep on.
  • Good value for money – At less than $10 USD for two of these flat perches, you won’t feel ripped off after buying. They’re strong, durable, and the perfect size for small to medium-sized parrots.
  • Easy to install – Unlike the next few platforms on this list, the Niteangel perches can be installed pretty much anywhere on the cage using two washers and a wingnut. Super simple, which is what we want as bird owners.

Cons:

  • Large birds can destroy it quickly – Birds that are larger than cockatiels and also have a mission to eliminate these perches will do so pretty quickly. African greys, amazon parrots and cockatoos could probably go through one of these fir wood perches within a week or two. However, it’s still pretty durable for smaller parrots.

2. KINTOR Corner Platform Perch For Birds

Key Features:

Dimensions: 10.04″ L x 9.5″ W x 0.79″ H (25.5cm L x 24.13cm W x 2cm H)

Materials: Natural quartz sand and natural wood

Ideal for: Budgies, cockatiels, lovebirds, parrotlets, conures, finches

Pros:

  • Spacious platform – There is plenty of room on this corner platform perch for 2 small birds to stand on it at the same time. However, you probably couldn’t fit a pair of birds that are any bigger than cockatiels on this perch.
  • Nice corner design – Not too many bird perches are designed for the corner of the cage, so this definitely earns a point for being unique. By using this perch in the corner, you’re reserving other cage areas for natural wood branches or other perches.

Cons:

  • Limited to the cage corner – Although it’s good that this perch can fit into the corner, it feels a bit restrictive that it can’t be used anywhere else. Couldn’t find anything else wrong with this perch, so I guess I’m just nitpicking.

3. Polly’s Pet Products – Comfy Clam Flat Perch

Key Features:

Dimensions: 5″ L x 4″ W x 2.25″ H (12.7cm L x 10.16cm W x 5.7cm H)

Materials: Kelp, iodine, calcium (often includes bird-safe food colouring)

Ideal for: Budgies, parrotlets, cockatiels, conures, finches, and other similar-sized birds

Pros:

  • A unique type of perch – Everything about this clam perch is different to most other perches on the market. This is good if you’re looking for a unique toy/perch to add to your bird’s cage.
  • Made from edible materials – The fact that this perch is actually safe for parrots to eat is also unique. Kelp, iodine, and calcium are all beneficial for birds.
  • Can be installed sideways – The clam perch can easily be installed sideways or the regular way. Switching sides regularly is a good way to provide extra surface variety from a single perch.

Cons:

  • Looks different than advertised – The main product photo shows a white clam. However, a majority of review images show that it has been coloured by an unknown dye. I’m assuming it’s bird-safe food dye, but they don’t actually specify.

4. Long Rectangular Platform Bird Perch

Key Features:

Dimensions: 12.4″ L x 5.3″ W x 0.6″ H (31.5cm L x 13.5cm W x 1.5cm H)

Materials: Natural wood

Ideal for: Budgies, conures, cockatiels, African grey parrots, goffins cockatoos

Pros:

  • Very long platform – the size of this rectangular platform perch makes it suitable for larger parrots, such as African greys and cockatoos. But it also provides a lot of room for the smaller birds.
  • Can be installed almost anywhere in the cage – The only limitation on this perch is that it needs to be installed onto the cage bars with two screws. It can be installed high or low, outside or inside, and on any face of the cage.
  • Uses two screws – Due to the size of the platform, it would be a bit unstable with only one screw. Having two screws on opposite sides of the perch makes it able to withstand a bit more weight. This makes it good for supporting larger birds.

Cons:

  • Larger parrots can easily chew through it – The platform is only 1.5cm thick, which is definitely thin enough for a larger parrot to just bite straight through it without too much trouble. Cockatoos and macaws in particular could rip this platform to shreds within a week.
  • Not the best value for money – At the end of the day, this perch really is just a flat piece of wood with some hardware installed. You could easily make a perch that is just as good or better for less than half the price.

5. Kathson 3PK Flat Wooden Perches For Birds

Key Features:

Dimensions: 6.3″ L x 2.5″ W x 0.5″ H (16cm L x 6.5cm W x 1.2cm H)

Materials: Natural quartz sand & wood

Ideal for: Parrotlets, finches, budgies, cockatiels, conures, and smaller birds

Pros:

  • 3 Perches Included – Including 3 perches for the price of one is how this product earned its spot on this list. With 3 flat perches, you could join them together to make a very long platform for your small birds, for example.
  • Strong & durable wood – Since these platforms are only suitable for small birds, they’ll be quite durable as those tiny beaks couldn’t destroy them too quickly.
  • Good value for money – $14 USD is a pretty good price for 3 platform perches, especially when compared to the previous rectangular perch which is slightly more expensive for just a single perch. Overall, this platform perch package is good value for money.

Cons:

  • The perches are very small – The flat perches are a lot smaller than what they seem on Amazon, which is what a lot of reviewers think as well.

Are Flat Perches Actually Good For Birds?

Short answer, yes, flat perches are good to have in the bird cage.

Birds use less energy when perching on a flat surface, so having at least one inside the cage can provide a nice little roosting spot.

Parrots with arthritis or bumblefoot may also benefit from a platform perch.

Besides that, flat surfaces are simply good for adding perch variety to the cage when paired with natural wood perches of varying sizes, thicknesses, and textures. Wild birds perch on a new surface almost every time they land, so it’s important that we try to give them this variety in captivity as much as possible.

If we can do that, we can make their pet lives a little more natural.
